MALTA

September 26, 2018

Bongu minn Malta,

Malta is the tenth smallest country in the world at only 316 km2. Malta is made up of three islands. The main Island of Malta, Comino, and Gozo. All three islands are beautiful in their own way. Every island is surrounded by the most beautiful, crystal clear, blue water I have ever seen. There is so much to do from tanning on the beach to cliff diving, to partying on a boat in the Mediterranean Sea. The minute I stepped foot in Malta I knew I was going to love it.

Fun Fact it is very easy to get around because the national language is both Maltese and English!

Also, they drive on the left side of the road so if you plan to take a taxi don’t get in on the driver’s side as I almost did.

Azure Window

The iconic arch of Malta collapsed about a year ago now due to a heavy storm. Although it is gone, you will still find pictures and postcards about it all around the cities.

Valletta

Valetta is the capital city of Malta. It is filled with great restaurants, shopping, cathedrals, and the harbor. There are lots to do in Valletta. The free walking tour is a really good way to learn more about the city and history of things around to do. This is also a great place to take a ferry to the other islands.

Popeye Village

If you have ever seen the movie ‘Popeye’ this is the place for you. What used to be the film set for the movie is now something that people visit to feel as if they were in the movie. It is neat to see the behind the scenes and even walk through the village as the actors did.

Blue Lagoon

The blue lagoon is on the island of Comino. It is the smallest island of Malta but is more than gorgeous! This is definitely the party area of Malta. If you are looking for a more peaceful time without a boatload of people, take the first ferry over there at 9 am from the west side of the island. By 10:30 am the craziness begins. The beach area and cliffs around it turn into a mess of people and the blue lagoon is so full you won’t be able to see the water. (Okay this is an exaggeration, but it does get incredibly busy) There is plenty to do there from renting out speedboats, to tubing rides, or chilling on yachts nearby.

Dingli Cliffs

These cliffs that line the south shore of Malta will leave you speechless. The path that lines the cliffs is a perfect place to get a small hike in and have a relaxing picnic along the way. If you have the time I would 100% recommend a sunset trip to the Dingli cliffs. The sunset can be seen perfectly from the cliffs making it a great spot to be at that time of day.

St. Peters Pool

This is a great place for some cliff diving. It is not huge cliffs but enough for the average wannabe thrill seeker. It makes for a great time swimming and laying out tanning. When you get off the bus you will have to walk to the pool. Follow the road that says to park. It is a little confusing but if you find the parking lot you will be close.

If you are looking for another adventure you can go the other way. When the road splits if you go left instead of right to the pool, there will be a small path that looks like it is in someone’s backyard but you can take this all the way out to a cliff area where there is no one and it makes for a great photo location and place to tan without the gobs of tourists. I ended up here by mistake trying to find St. Peter’s Pool and it was the best mistake I’ve ever made.

Gozo

Gozo is one of the three islands of Malta. There are lots of things to do on the island of Gozo. Some things include the main city of Gozo, the blue hole, azure window (which is no longer there), and beaches along the coast. Gozo is a lot quieter than Malta because of it one of the less traveled islands. It is a great place for a day trip if you are staying on the main island of Malta or spend one night here as well.

Marsaxlokk

This is the town that is closest to St Peter’s pool. It is a fishing town so be sure to go to one of the restaurants along the water for the best seafood ever. There is also a small market along the water that is a great place to get some fresh food or even some souvenirs. Along with the amazing seafood and cute shops, you will see all the colorful boats of the fisherman bringing in their fresh caught.

Malta is somewhere that I could have stayed for much longer. I was only there for 4 days and wish I could have seen so much more. I would recommend going at least a week because even if you get bored of the sightseeing there are so many beaches that are perfect for relaxing.
