Γεια σας από την Ελλάδα!
Despite Mykonos being the “party island” of Greece. There are so many other beautiful beaches and sites to see on the island. Below you will find everything you need to know before visiting Mykonos.
Where to Stay
Mykonos lives up to its party status and you must keep this in mind when finding a place to stay. I stayed about a 15-minute walk from the city center and at night we could see strobe lights coming from the city and every once and a while you could hear faint music. As soon as you enter the city you can hear music coming in every direction. Also, keep in mind that many clubs don’t open until midnight and often are open until the sun comes up the next day. If you are planning to take part in the nightlife or don’t mind the music then consider the downtown places. There are so many gorgeous AirBnb’s which is what I did to save some money but there are also some pretty amazing resorts so check it all out before booking anything.
If you are looking for scenery just like Mykonos but a lot quieter check out Santorini.
Transportation
The Island is relatively easy to get around by public transportation as long as you watch the schedule closely and don’t miss the bus. Buses can sometimes be late as well but if you are not there when they get there, they don’t wait for anyone. They also have a ton of moped and four-wheelers for rent which is another good option for getting around.
Food
GYROS!!!! Well, I guess there are other foods as well but gyros are a must-have. While in Greece I saw a lot of crepe shops as well which surprised me. I also recommend going to the grocery store and getting food if you have a fridge because the meals are not so cheap.
Sites to See
1. Explore Downtown
This is a given but be sure to get downtown and explore the amazing streets of Greece. Mykonos is one of the most gorgeous places I have been city-wise and around every corner was another gorgeous white and blue building with gorgeous blooming flowers. I loved every street on this island and every shop had me wanting to buy everything. They have so many little boutiques and souvenir shops so go crazy and don’t forget to take a lot of pictures.
2. Windmills
One thing that this island is famous for is its gorgeous windmills. If you go into the city from the north end to the left are a few windmills that are a must-see. They also make a great photoshoot.
3. Boni Windmill
This windmill is best seen at sunset! Since the Windmill is on the top of a hill at the edge of the city giving you the best view of the city and sunset from above. Although the prime time to see this windmill is at sunset you will have a great view of the whole city at any time of the day.
4. Little Venice
Little Venice is a great part of town for yet another photoshoot and even has a lot of amazing stops to grab a bit to eat right on the water. Be careful though because the waves often come up onto the sidewalk and near the restaurants. You might get a little shower. The food is amazing in this area so be sure to check it out.
5. Agios Ioannis
Although this wasn’t my favorite beach on the island it still has an amazing view and is worth a short trip too. The beach doesn’t have great sand (rockier) but the water is gorgeous and amazing for a swim after being in the hot sun. Also there is not too much room to lay out since there is alot of hotels in this area that have parts of the beach reserved.
6. Ano Mera
Ano Mera is a super small town on Mykonos island. When I say small I mean 3 restaurants and a church small. If you are looking for something to do I still highly recommend checking it out. They have a few souvenir shops and the church is very pretty. WE even got to pet some cats around town. The views from this area are also very pretty.
7. Ftelia Beach
This is the closest and one of the nicest beaches by Ano Mera. If you head to Ano Mera for the morning then walk to the beach after that would be your best bet. The walk is a bit far but I promise the hike is worth it and the beach was so great for soaking up the sun and relaxing!
8. Panormos/Agios Sostis Beach
This beach was really nice and was cool because there was lots of sand area and not so crowded as many of the ones near Mykonos city are quite crowded. I also saw a lot of people parasailing.
9. Nios Stefanos-Armenistis Lighthouse
This lighthouse is a must-see. Especially at sunset. It was so gorgeous and I am so happy I went here. It is a bit outside the city. From where the bus drops you off it is about a 2.4-mile hike to the lighthouse. If you have a car or rented a motorbike or four-wheeler you can drive right up to the lighthouse.
10. Clubs
This is not the party island for no reason. There are clubs on every corner of every street and in between as well. Be prepared to party hard or not get any sleep from the music if your hotel is near the city center. One thing to keep in mind is that if you go to a club before midnight 1 am and it is dead – don’t be shocked. Most places don’t start the party until then and they go until sunrise! So be prepared to be up all night! Two of my favorite clubs were the scandanavian and the toy room!
