Asia | Semester at Sea

KOBE, JAPAN

May 13, 2020

Good Morning from Japan!

If you aren’t here for all the Semester at Sea stuff… I am currently sailing around the world. So without further ado, Japan is amazing!

When the ship arrived in Kobe, they were playing music for us at the port terminal. It was the most exciting thing to see after being at sea for so long after Hawaii!

Despite only spending one day in Kobe, it was super incredible.

When we first got off the ship we started to walk around and then made our way to Rokko Mountain. On the way, we stopped for some ramen for lunch. Despite no one speaking English and having no clue what we were ordering, it wasn’t too bad.

After a few hours of trying to figure out how to get to this mountain, we did it. There are some hiking trails to go up this but I recommend buying a Rokkosan Tourist Pass. They are $10 and they bring you to the Mountain from the City up the mountain on their trolly car, on the busses around the top to the different landmarks and back down the mountain. We were there in late January so there were a lot of things that were closed at the top of the mountain so I recommend going during the summer. If you can’t go during the summer, I still highly recommend checking it out.

When we got back to the city we just wandered the streets a bit and ran into China town. It was really strange seeing China town in an Asian country so close to China.

After strolling around a bit we went to the Kobe Tower. Although we decided not to go up it you can if you would like. If you are looking for a great place for a nice picnic this would be a great place to sit down and have lunch. There is an area right next to it with auditorium looking seating that would be a great place to hang out.

Then it was time to go back to the ship to get ready for Tokyo! WE walked back along the water which I highly recommend. It is a really pretty area and they have a huge sign/statue thing that says “Be Kobe” which is pretty neat.

See you in Tokyo!

xoxo Gina
