Semester at Sea

SEA OLYMPICS

May 7, 2020

Good Morning from the Middle of the Ocean once again!

Y-E-L-L! Y-E-L-L EVERYBODY YELL GO YELLOW! GO YELLOW! GO! GO! GO YELLOW!

Welcome to the Yellow Sea and clearly the best sea ever!

So, if you are unaware, when boarding the ship everyone is assigned a sea in which you become a team throughout the whole voyage. But where all the team spirit shines, is during the Sea Olympics! This is a day dedicated to all kinds of challenges and lots and lots of cheering! The best part is there are no classes today to fully participate in all the events.

Each sea is run by a few chosen Sea Captains and your Seas Resident Director! Throughout the Semester there are many meetings with your sea to plan for Sea Olympics and also just fun bonding things such as game nights, cookie socials, and karaoke!

On the day of Sea Olympics that are so many events from coin dive, relay race, trivia, Crossfit, and synchronized swimming!

First, we all gather in the Union for the first two events! As each Sea comes in they cheer then sit down. There were also lots of teams trying to cheer louder than each other and random cheers. The first event was a spirit competition. Each Sea made a banner and got to present one of their cheers. When this was done they put two seas at a time head to head in a cheer battle.

Then for the second event. It was the lip sync battle! This one is where each team choreographs a dance and lip-syncs to music. This was such a fun event to watch and I really wish I would have participated in it! My team got second in this event!

Then the rest of the day there were a bunch of events going on all over the ship. It was kinda sad because I really wanted to watch them all but there was no way to fit all events in the day if none overlapped. Each Sea competes in all the events. I chose to be one of the synchronized swimmers for the Yellow Sea and it was the most fun ever.

My Syncro team started practicing about a week before Sea Olympics but lots of other seas were spying on us and stealing our moves. When the time came the crowd for this event was quite large! We killed it and ended up getting 1st place!!!!

The day was filled with lots of running from event to event to catch it all! Overall the Yellow Sea got 3rd place which is amazing because when I woke up that morning I was praying for second to last because I really wasn’t too confident in us! We pulled through though.

Overall the day was so much fun even though I have dots sunburnt on my forehead from the facepaint! This is one of the best traditions I think and I truly believe it is not something you should skip out on. There is an event for everyone, so sign up for something! You won’t regret it!

See You Soon

xoxo Gina
