Hallo vo d Schwiz!
Switzerland is one of my favorite countries that I have visited. From the atmosphere to the gorgeous scenery Switzerland is perfect. There is so much to see in every direction and it is impossible to hit it all. One town that I really enjoyed was Basel. While visiting Basel I loved how calm the city was. There was so much to do and see yet it didn’t have the hustle bustle of a city and was not filled with tourists. Basel shares an airport with Germany and is on the border of France. I highly recommend checking out the sites below if you are ever in Basel!
Münsterplatz
This reformed protestant church was originally a Catholic church is one of the most famous landmarks in Basel and is known for its gorgeous red sandstone architecture. The cathedral was destroyed by the earthquakes in 1356 but has since been remodeled and rebuilt in the early 1400s. This is also one of the oldest sites in Basel. The Münsterplatz is located in the center of the city and has a great place to relax surrounding the cathedral. It is also a car-free area making it an even more picturesque place.
Elisabethenkirche
The Münsterplatz is not the only major cathedral in Basel. There is also the Basel Cathedral which is a bit less popular and in a more crowded area but is just as breathtaking. This 19th-century cathedral is so gorgeous in every way. Fun Fact: This cathedral was actually funded by a wealthy couple who are now buried in black marble under the main floor! The best place to take pictures of the outside is from across the street in the front!
Tinguely Fountain
This fountain was built in 1977 by the artist Jean Tinguely. In the fountain are 10 sculptures that are in constant motion from the water flowing around it. The fountain is located where the old theater stage was. The fountains are made to mimic the movement of the actors.
Marketplace
Not only can you buy fresh food and other goods, but the marketplace is one of my favorite buildings in Basel. It is such a fun atmosphere to walk around. There are some local foods that are definitely worth a try.
Rhine River
The Rhine river runs right through the middle of Basel and if you go down far enough, you will run into Germany. The river has a great path that you can walk along with restaurant and shop along with tons of places to sit and take in the beautiful city. You can also swim in the river and many people do river floats but be very careful when doing this so you don’t get caught in a current that is too strong. If you go to the South side of the river you can take a small boat across the river for only a few Francs.
Lookout Tower
I am not sure the exact name of the lookout tower but if you go to the restaurant Bargbeiz Gempenturm you will find it. The tower is a bit back in the woods from this restaurant. From the tower, you can see the whole city and beyond. The sights are incredible. I went and had a picnic for dinner and then watched the sunset. I highly recommend doing that!
Shopping
There are lots of small boutiques in Basel that are perfect for finding new clothes. Although since they are specialty clothes they are often expensive. You can go downtown by the marketplace and find some more generic stores as well. Also while you are out and about make sure to buy some swiss chocolate because trust me, its life changing!
Photoshoots
Basel is by far one of the most photogenic cities I have ever been to so be sure to get off the beaten path and find some cute streets to take pictures of your future home. I guarantee you will want to move here after exploring the city!
